Every now and then, we who run the Jazz School find ourselves browsing through our video archive and coming across gems that we all agree are perfect for an educational video course. During the coronavirus pandemic, with events being cancelled, many musicians relied on an infrastructure that allowed them to reach their audience despite lockdowns and curfews. One such cancelled event was a workshop I had intended to run in April 2020 but was unable to do so. As a result, I decided not to cancel the workshop entirely for the participants, but instead to offer them a video course that was available exclusively to those who had registered for the workshop via a special link online. Now, more than six years on, we thought it was time to make a very informative part of this course available to our Jazz Schools community: the highlight, "Blues For Joe", complete with a performance, sheet music, tablature and a detailed explanation of the first chorus.

Lesson 1Introduction

Duration: min

Let me introduce you to the topics covered in the course "Blues For Joe".

Lesson 2Blues For Joe – Performance

Duration: min

Here I'm playing the track "Blues For Joe" for you in its entirety. Don't worry, we're planning a full explanation of the second and third choruses of the track.

Lesson 3Blues For Joe – 1st Chorus

Duration: min

This first chorus is already quite a challenge. If some of the passages still seem unfamiliar to you, I recommend checking out the following courses at the Jazz School: Shell Chords, Altered, Tritone Substitution and, of course, Jazz Blues. The topics are explained in detail there, with plenty of examples.
